Šlītere lighthouse was built in the middle of the 19th century and is the second oldest lighthouse in the territory of Latvia. Although in second place in terms of age, it boasts a couple of other titles. It is the highest lighthouse above sea level (82 m.l.l.), as well as the furthest inland (5 km from the sea). The height of the lighthouse itself is 26 meters.
Initially, the tower did not serve as a lighthouse, but as a day navigation sign, and served mainly to monitor forest fires. After the Second World War, a gas lamp was installed in the tower, thus making it a full lighthouse.
The lighthouse was closed in 1999 and has been transferred to Slītere National Park since 2000. Improvements have been made and the tower has been adapted to the needs of tourism. It serves as an observation tower from which you can clearly see the partridge strait and the Sirve lighthouse tower in Saaremaa (Estonia). There is also an exhibition hall and a tour desk.
